When the District 13 basketball coach began selecting Players of the Year, they didn't look very far.
Three of the four boys division Players of the Year were voted to Lawrence County players. Also, one female player was extended a postseason honor.
Chesapeake senior Aaron Gossett, Rock Hill senior David Schug, and Ironton St. Joseph junior Shawn Hacker all were voted the coaches' District 13 Player of the Year.
Gossett won the award in Division III, Schug in Div. II, and Hacker in Div. IV. Gossett and Schug were also chosen as the representative to the coaches' North/South All-Star Game.
Fairland senior Jennifer Jones will also represent the Div. III girls in the North/South All-Star Game.
Oak Hill's Andrea McNeal was originally picked for the game, but she suffered a season-ending knee injury and cannot play. Jones was the runner-up to McNeal as the district Player of the Year and was the alternate North/South representative.
The 6-foot-1 Schug averaged nearly 20 points a game for four seasons and surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark during the first game of the regular season. He had a 19.7 scoring average to go along with 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
Gossett, a 6-4 forward, led the Panthers to an eighth straight league championship, a 21-2 record and a berth in the regional semifinals. He scored 12.0 points a game, had 9.0 rebounds and shot 58 percent from the field.
The 6-7 Hacker scored at a 21.9 clip, grabbed 16.5 rebounds per contest and averaged 2.9 blocked shots.
Jones, a 5-6 senior guard, had 18 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 65 percent from the foul line.
Junior Rickie McDonie of Rock Hill was a special mention pick in Div. II.
Joining Gossett on the Div. III first team were Fairland senior Chris Dinwiddie, Ironton junior Josh Sands and Chesapeake senior Nick Karle.
On the second team were Fairland senior Brad Taliaferro and sophomore Michael Hill and Coal Grove junior Brandon Rymer. Special mention went to Chesapeake senior Matt Rucker, Ironton junior Derique Bacon and Coal Grove senior Justin Gibson.
Symmes Valley senior guard Terry Elswick was voted to the boys Div. IV first team. Teammate Kyle Gilmore, a junior guard, was a second team selection while seniors J.D. Miller and Kevin Miller were honorable mention.
Also on the honorable mention list was 6-3 Ironton St. Joseph senior forward Chris Laber.
In the girls Div. II selections, Rock Hill senior guard Miranda Edwards was named to the first team while senior forward Rachel Hartwig and junior guard Marie Bamer were special mention.
On the girls Div. III first team with Jones were South Point senior Allison Perdue, Chesapeake junior Lisa Perry, and Ironton senior Candace Ferguson.
Named to the second team in Div. III were Ironton senior Ashley Hannon, Fairland junior Megan Fisher and South Point senior Sarah Stevens and freshman Jessi Craft.
Symmes Valley Lady Vikings senior Anna Bodmer, and sophomores Shauna Rose and Leslie Floyd were voted to the second team in Div. IV. Senior Ashley Crawford and freshman Rebecca Capper were special mention.
