SOUTH POINT - It started with a balloon launch Monday and it will end with a pancake breakfast Saturday.
A number of activities are planned this week as the Lawrence County Early Childhood Center celebrates The Week of the Young Child.
"This week is meant to celebrate childhood and the wonderful joy children bring to our lives," said Sue Vanderhoof, Early Childhood Center program director. "We also want to recognize programs and people who are working hard to provide good services to children and families."
The local celebration is part of a national observance sponsored by the National Association of Educators of Young Children.
After the balloon launch Monday, WKEE radio personality J.B. Miller visited the children as guest storyteller. Yesterday, the Ironton High School Singers, the IHS chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the IHS stomp team and the I-Town Soldiers entertained the youngsters. The stomp team performed and then led the children in activities.
"Our little kids were mesmerized," Vanderhoof said. "We're so grateful to the high school students for coming."
Today's activities include storytelling and music.
Thursday the Early Childhood Center will have its annual open house. More than 25 area agencies will offer information and other items geared toward families with young children.
The pancake breakfast Saturday is from 8:30 -11 a.m. The cost is $3 for adults and a $1 for children 10 and under.
