KNOXVILLE, TN. -- Zach Smith is as good out-of-state as he is in Ohio.

Running in the University of Tennessee's Volunteer Classic high school invitational track meet Saturday, Smith won the 800 meter run.

Smith ran a 1:56.2 time to break his own school record of 1:56.6 he ran last year in the Division II state meet.

A total 46 competitors were entered in the event. Smith was in the middle of the pack during the first 500 meters, then made his move.

"He took the lead with 300 meters left and finished strong," Pointers coach Randy Smith. "This was state meet caliber competition. There were a lot of good runners here."

The Pointers shuttle hurdle team of Patrick McCleary, Patrick McNeely, Clinton Smith and Benji Smith finished seventh.
