CHESAPEAKE - It might not have been his best, but it was good enough.

Tommy Pemberton had a few problems but still pitched a four-hitter as the Coal Grove Hornets remained unbeaten in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 7-3 win Monday over the Chesapeake Panthers.

Pemberton struck out six and walked one to best Chesapeake's Nick Karle who struck out seven and walked two.

"Tommy wasn't at his best, but he fought through it and they only got four hits. He buckled down and went after them," Hornets coach John Jones said.

Luke Tackett went 3-4 and Randy Wise 2-3 with a double to pace the Hornets. Jeff Gilkison was 2-3 with two doubles for the Panthers.

Coal Grove went in front 2-0 in the first when Wise doubled, Pemberton was safe on an error, and Nick Bazell doubled them home.

Chesapeake got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Justin Finley was hit by a pitch, moved up on a wild pickoff throw, and came home on a double by Gilkison.

The Panthers tied the game in the third inning.

With one out, Finley singled, stole second and came home on Todd Marcum's double.

The Hornets went back on top with a run in the fifth.

Tackett and Justin Fairman singled, Wise was hit by a pitch, and Pemberton hit a sacrifice fly.

Chesapeake tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth when P. J. Rase singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Gilkison's second double.

Coal Grove took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth.

With one out, Aaron Kelly was safe on an error, Tackett and Fairman singled to load the bases, and Wise singled home a run. Pemberton singled in another run, Spears walked to force in a run, and Bazell grounded into a fielder's choice as Wise scored.

"I'm concerned with our offensive output right now. We should be hitting better. We're just not getting the hit we need," Panthers coach Joe Waugh.

Coal Grove (4-6, 3-0 OVC) plays at Portsmouth West Tuesday, then hosts Chesapeake on Wednesday. Chesapeake (4-4, 2-1 OVC) plays at 7 p.m. at Minford.
