Tracy Mays might have been tired, but not too tired.

Mays, a sophomore, turned in one of her best performances of the season as she threw a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday as the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers blanked the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 17-0.

"Tracy was a little tired after pitching last night, but her performance was still good. She was throwing the ball hard. Coal Grove hit the ball, but we made some good plays behind her," Ironton coach Beth Freeman said. "And Tracy made some good plays herself."

Mays struck out five and walked four in picking up the win.

Ironton banged out 15 hits with Maria Frazer going 4-4 with four runs batted in to lead the attack. Mays was 3-4 with three RBI.

The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Valerie Keating, Frazer and Mays all singled.

Ironton came back with four runs in the second sparked by Mays' two-run double.

Julie Belville had a two-run double and Katy Barnett singled in two more runs as Ironton scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 12-0 lead.

Frazer drove in two runs in the fourth inning that gave Ironton a 16-run cushion and helped create the mercy rule win.

"Our bats were on. Our bats, our defense and our pitching all came together at once," Freeman said.

Ironton (4-10) hosts Portsmouth at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
