SOUTH POINT - After a tough loss earlier in the day, the South Point Pointers needed a win.

They got what they needed.

South Point lost a 5-4 decision to Chesapeake in the bottom of the seventh in a morning game, but bounced back to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 6-4 Saturday afternoon in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"We needed something after the Chesapeake loss. We got our confidence back. McCarty came in and pitched well for a freshman. With (Justin) Smith and McCarty, we've got a bright future," Pointers coach Kevin Milem said.

Rock Hill took the early lead with three runs in the second inning.

Kyle Lewis was safe on an error, David Schug singled, and Matt Barnard had a two-run double. Sean Primm then singled home Barnard.

The Pointers cut the lead to 3-2 with two in the fifth.

Corey Smoot doubled and scored on Zane Joy's base hit. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Joy to score.

South Point then took a 6-3 lead in the sixth.

Dale Kinney singled, moved up on a passed ball, took third when Adam McCarty grounded out, and came home on a bad pickoff throw.

Justin Workman was then hit by a pitch, Smoot singled, and Joy's sacrifice bunt was thrown away allowing both runners to score. Nathan Leighty then singled home Joy.

Rock Hill mounted a rally in the seventh only to fall short.

Micah Settle singled, Nathan Litteral hit into a fielder's choice, and Miller and Lewis followed with base hits as the run scored.

But McCarty struck out the next batter to end the game.

Smoot went 3-3 to lead the Pointers. Kinney went 2-2.

"Corey Smoot has been on fire with his hitting," Milem said.

McCarty got the win in relief as he struck out three and walked one.

Losing pitcher Aaron Miller allowed just seven hits, struck out three and walked two.

South Point (5-10, 5-4 OVC) plays Monday at Fairland. Rock Hill falls to 6-10, 2-6 in the OVC.
