RUSSELL, Ky. -- Greg Wheeler went wire-to-wire.

Leading from start to finish, Wheeler won the famed 26th annual Run By The River 10K run Saturday along the banks of the Ohio River.

Wheeler, 23, of Barboursville, W.Va., and Patty Layne, 43, of Flatwoods were the winners of the 10K races while Blake Jones, 20, of Portsmouth, and Jennifer Lattavo, 24, of Portsmouth paced men's and women's

5K run.

Wheeler had a winning time of 37:06, more than 5 minutes ahead of second place finisher Delmar Scowden, 56 of

Wheelersburg, Ohio. Wheeler turned in pace of 5:59 compared to Scowden's 6:53.

Meanwhile, Lane led the women's 10K with an overall time of 47:09.

Jones completed the 5K course in 17:20, 61 seconds ahead of Anthony Lattavo, 47, of Portsmouth.

In the women's 5K, Lattavo's wife Jennifer led with a time of 20:18.

The Run By The River is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County, Ky. Money raised from the races are used for a variety of Kiwanis community projects including a planned Greenup County Bicentennial gift of a landscaping improvements including a tree and bench for the Greenup County War Memorial in Wurtland and a Kid's Day event this fall.

The club sponsors Key Clubs at Russell and Raceland-Worthington high schools and each year gives a graduating senior at $500 scholarship. The club prepares more than 40 food baskets at Thanksgiving and provides shoes for families of disasters through a program with the Greenup Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Despite the rainy weather this spring, race chairman Tim Gearhart said the event managed to maintain another tradition.

"In the 26 years since the Run By The River was started, it has never rained on the race. Before it and after it, yes, but never on it," Gearhart said. "It looked bad when we were passing out the trophies, but it managed to hold off."
