A former Ironton school board member will serve

the school district again -- temporarily.

The school board last night voted to appoint attorney John Wolfe to replace veteran board member Kathy McGinnis, who resigned last month. Wolfe said he will only serve the six months left in McGinnis' term, and won't seek election in his own right.

The decision came after an hour-and-a-half executive session during which the board interviewed four of the six candidates who applied for the vacant seat. The vote was unanimous.

After the meeting, board members cited Wolfe's previous experience on the board as the most compelling reason in his favor.

"His previous experience is the biggest thing," board member Robert Pleasant said. "We're starting a new school year in a couple of weeks and with his experience he will be able to make a smooth transition."

"The start of the school year is a crucial time," board member Gary Neal added.

Board president Teresa Parker cited Wolfe's knowledge of

school legalities and finances as other things in his favor.

Wolfe said he is looking forward to serving on the board, but has no intentions of seeking election this fall.

"Sometimes with an incumbent, there's a bit of an advantage, "Wolfe said. "I want to give a level playing field to everyone who wants to run this fall."

Parker thanked the other three interviewees

and told them that she would be pleased to work with them if they choose to run for the school board in the future.
