PAINTSVILLE, Ky. -- As it turned out, the home runs were just solo shots.

The game was football, but Rock Hill coach Bob McCollister was talking baseball after his Redmen beat the Johnson Central Eagles 27-20 Friday in the annual Coal Bowl.

Rock Hill (1-0) used a big game by James Russell with 158 yards rushing on 28 carries and a touchdown to offset some big plays by the Eagles offense.

"We just gave up three big plays," McCollister said. "You can't give up home runs. You have to make people drive the ball. We made big plays, but we gave up some big plays."

Rock Hill had its own big plays. David Smith turned in the big defensive play of the game when he scooped up a fumble and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter that extended the Redmen lead to 20-8.

For the game, Rock Hill had 254 total yards including 189 on the ground. Quarterback Steven Daily was 5 of 11 for 65 yards.

Besides their four touchdowns, the Redmen were inside the 10-yard line twice, once at the end of the first half only to have time run out.

"We moved the ball well the whole game. We should have scored a couple of more times," McCollister said. "But they were very big, and it was a physical ball game."

Dan Mullins 1-yard run and Russell's conversion scamper gave Rock Hill an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Eagles matched that score on the very next play from scrimmage as Ron Blume raced 70 yards for a touchdown. The conversion was good and the score was tied 8-8.

Russell's 25-yard scoring run snapped the deadlock in the second quarter and gave Rock Hill a 14-8 halftime lead.

Smith got his fumble recovery in the third quarter, but Blume ripped off his second big run by going 60 yards for a touchdown.

The conversion failed.

"It was third and 17 and I think we just ran by them. We were expecting a pass," McCollister said. "But I thought our defense made some strides. You don't see the wishbone very often."

Mullins rumbled 20 yards in the fourth quarter for his second score and Rock Hill now led 27-14.
