PEDRO - Rock Hill beat a team that last year played for the state championship.
So how could it feel frustrated?
Friday night the Redmen knocked off the Portsmouth West Senators 19-12 in a game that they dominated in the first half and held on for life in the second.
"We've got to get this licked or it will come back and bite us," Redmen coach Bob McCollister said. "When you get a chance to put a nail in the coffin you have to get it done."
Rock Hill led 13-0 at half but held the Senators to just two first downs. Rock Hill also had the ball inside the 10-yard line twice without scoring.
West rallied in the second half and missed an extra point that would have tied the game with 3:41 left to play
"I am very proud of our guys," McCollister added. "We have been able to fight through a lot of adversity so far this season."
Steven Daily led the balanced Redmen attack with 132 yards passing. James Russell had 63 yards rushing and Dan Mullins had 28 yards.
Scott Summers led the West Senators with 71 yards rushing and Josh Logan added 68.
On its first two possessions Rock Hill drove inside the 10-yard line only to come away scoreless. Under a heavy rush, Daily hit Donald Cade with a 20-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter making it 7-0.
With 2:23 left in the half, Russell broke free from 13 yards out making a couple of tacklers miss on his way to making it 13-0.
West made a game of it with a 57-yard 11 play drive to open the third quarter scoring on a 6-yard run from Summers cutting the lead to 13-6.
Later in the third the Redmen again drove deep into Senators territory to the 28-yard line. Two penalties later and the Redmen were facing first and 30 from their own 47-yard line.
With little over 10 minutes left in the game the West Senators went on another long drive. Thirteen plays and seven minutes later Levi Morgan hit Brandon Bradshaw from 20 yards out to make it 13-12. Sean Bower's extra point kick slammed into the left upright and fell to the side.
West held the Redmen but threw an interception on fourth down to Elswick who took it to the 3-yard line.
On the next play Russell scored untouched making it 19-12 with 1:37 left. West could not rally on its last possession.
Rock Hill (3-1) had 235 yards total offense with 103 yards on the ground. The Senators had 193 yards rushing on 37 tries.
