COAL GROVE - Things went from bad to worse for the Coal Grove Junior Hornets last Thursday.
After losing two of their top starters to injuries for the season, the Hornets ran into the Chesapeake Junior Panthers who rolled to a 38-0 Ohio Valley Conference Middle School win.
Chesapeake opened the game with an impressive 12-play, 65-yard drive to take a 6-0 lead.
The Hornets could mount very little on their first drive and were forced to punt. A nice punt return by Terry Brown put the ball at the Coal Grove 47 and the Panthers scored just two plays later for a 14-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the third quarter when Chesapeake erupted for 24 points and cruised to the win.
The Panthers racked up 275 rushing yards compared to just 126 for Coal Grove.
Matt Cooper led the Hornets with 72 yards on 12 carries. B.J. Harbolt led the defense with 10 tackles. Michael Lewis and Cooper had six tackles each.
Coal Grove played at Fairland Thursday night.
