Compared to many other states, Ohio is playing catch-up when it comes to promoting high-tech jobs.
The only way the state is going to catch up with its peers is to create and maintain such positions. This is why State Issue 1 is important to the future of Ohio.
The proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution would permit state government to invest in private science and technology based research projects. The intent is to create high-paying jobs.
If passed, State Issue 1, a $500 million, 20-year bond issue, would put in place the final funding of the $1.6-billion Third Frontier Project, the state's effort to expand and promote Ohio's research-and-development capabilities.
The goal of Issue 1 is to create jobs and invest in equipment and workers in Ohio that will reverse a declining economy. It accomplishes that goal by allowing the state to give grants and loans to private businesses, research organizations and educational institutions engaged in promoting the jobs of the future.
Most important, State Issue 1 creates these jobs without raising taxes.
We see no logical argument to vote against State Issue 1.
Some say government has no business allocating public funds to benefit private business.
But, this investment will create new jobs and secure them for many years to come.
Some argue the proposal creates an uneven playing field in favor of high-tech companies. It is becoming more obvious each day that high-tech jobs are the wave of the future. Ohio must promote a modernized workforce and economy if it wishes to prosper in the future. State Issue 1 is a good way to encourage that growth.
We should do all we can to encourage businesses to create high-tech jobs in Ohio. State Issue 1 will help create these jobs and help our economy grow. A yes vote will also help us keep our children from going to other states to find employment.
That is why we urge voters to support State Issue 1 on the Nov. 4 ballot.
