PROCTORVILLE- Proctorville village officials have issued an advisory regarding the village's drinking water after an inspection turned up amounts of lead in the water supply.
According to a written statement from village officials, the water supply was monitored Nov. 25.
When the village received the results of the inspection Friday, it showed lead levels ranging from below detection to 810 micrograms per liter.
An investigation is underway to determine how the
lead got into the water supply and how to eliminate it.
According to the statement, village officials are working closely with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on this matter.
In the meantime, infants, children, pregnant women and people with such medical conditions as neurological dysfunction and kidney disease are discouraged from drinking the water, according to the statement. Boiling water will not eliminate lead in drinking water and according to the statement, people in these groups may suffer adverse health effects in consuming even small amounts of the water. These groups of people may, however, use the water for bathing and washing dishes.
Lead can cause a variety of adverse health effects in humans, including interference with red blood cell chemistry, developmental delays in children and babies and increases in blood pressure for adults.
