Dragons defense does in Flyers

The St. Joseph Flyers saw what was coming, they just couldn't stop.

The Flyers preparation for Dragons was to no avail as the Dragons took a 59-37 win Friday night.

"We knew what they were going to do. We worked on it for two days, but we acted like we had never seen it before, and then it was turnover after turnover," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said.

The Dragons defense forced the Flyers into 28 turnovers.

"We played well as a team, and that was one of our best efforts since I've been here," Fairland coach John McClung said "We did a good job limiting (Shawn) Hacker's touches the second half. Our plan was to pressure their guards into turnovers, and then swarm Hacker."

Hacker, the Flyers 6-foot-7 senior center, had 22 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots, but he managed only six points the second half.

"Shawn's the only player we have with any varsity experience. Our young kids' inexperience showed tonight, " Simpson said.

Kendall Staggs scored 16 points, Jeremy Pritt had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Matt Clark 10 to lead the Dragons, 2-1.

"The seniors played well. Kendall did a good job handling the ball, and we got a good game out of Jeremy Pritt. Nolan Love and Daniel Spears had good games playing their roles for the team. Kyle Wise and Matt Burd came of bench and did good job," McClung said.

"Our bench is coming along. The more experience they get, the better they'll be and the better we're going to be."

Pritt scored 10 points in the first quarter as Fairland jumped in front 20-6. Hacker had all of the St. Joseph points.

Hacker scored 10 points in the second quarter as the Flyers rallied to within 27-21 at the half.

Fairland moved in front 39-27 lead at the end of the third quarter as Kyle Wise got six points.

The Dragons continued to pull away in the fourth quarter. Staggs had eight points and Fairland converted 10 of 14 from the foul line.
