SOUTH POINT - Finally.
After six tough losses, the South Point Lady Pointers came away with a win Tuesday by beating the Fairland Lady Dragons 54-41 in the consolation game of the South Point Ford Holiday Classic.
Plymouth won the championship game 83-61 over Lawrence County, Ky.
"This was getting over the hump," Lady Pointers coach Dave Adams said. "When you win close games, it feeds and builds. When you lose close games, you get to the end and think 'When are the bad things going to happen?'
"We still have things to work on. Fairland's girls are young, but they work hard."
Jessi Craft scored 23 points and had four assists for the Pointers. Alisha Bridges scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Latisha Koukos had 10 rebounds and three steals.
Brianna Davis and Megan Fisher scored 10 points each for Fairland (3-4).
Craft scored six points and Bridges hit a big 3-pointer as South Point took a 13-6 first quarter lead. Craft had six points in the second quarter to help offset four points each by Kara Riley and Fisher to give the Pointers a 27-16 halftime lead.
"Craft did a good job pushing the ball up the floor, and Alisha's 3-pointer was big," Adams said.
South Point stretched its lead to 41-23 after three quarters.
On the all-tournament team were MVP Katie Coon and Andee Reeder of Plymouth, Jenny Humphrey of Lawrence County, Megan Fisher of Fairland, and Alisha Bridges and Jessi Craft of South Point.
The tournament was sponsored by South Point Ford. Foodfair provided food for the hospitality room and Stephens Insurance also made a donation.
"It turned out to be a good tournament. It was a good to see teams from outside the area," Adams said.
In the championship game, Plymouth ran its record to 8-0 as Andee Reeder scored 31 points, Katie Coon 24 and Brandy Chaffins 18.
Reeder had 10 points in the first quarter as the Lady Big Red took a 19-17 lead, then scored nine in the second quarter as the lead grew to 43-32 at the half.
Chaffins scored eight pints including a 3-pointer in the third quarter as the lead stayed at 11 points, 59-48.
But Reeder got 10 more points and Koon seven in the fourth quarter as Plymouth pulled away to the big win.
