CHESAPEAKE - The seven years of bad luck for Chesapeake opponents is over.
The South Point Pointers pulled off a stunning 51-35 upset of the
Panthers Saturday in an Ohio Valley Conference game, snapping Chesapeake's
home winning streak that had extended for more than seven years.
"I can't think of three or four times we left them for an open shot," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said. "And we weren't letting them in the lane. We did a good job of controlling the game.
"We did a good job mixing up defenses and keeping them from getting comfortable. We handled their press and our guys off the bench did a good job. It was a definite team effort."
South Point (4-6, 1-1) was led by Justin Workman with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Seth Craft had 15 points and six rebounds while Quentin Smith added 11 points.
Chesapeake (8-1, 2-1) was led by P.J. Rase with 15 points. Trent Finley added eight.
The Pointers were up 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and the lead was nine points late in the first half, thanks to nine points by Craft.
But Rase hit a pair of 3-pointers before the half to cut the deficit to 19-15.
"It all depends on how hard we go out and play,"
Lafon said.
"They took the lead early, but we came back. After that ,we just handled them. Our kids just played so hard. I can't get over how hard they played."
Chesapeake took the lead at 25-24 with three minutes left in the third quarter, but the Pointers rallied to take a 31-25 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Panthers came back to go up 32-31, but Smith's short runner put the Pointers up for good at 33-32.
South Point then converted 12 of 16 from the line down the stretch to pull away and post the upset win.
Workman had 10 points and 10 rebound in the second half.
"Justin Workman really stepped it up for us. He played the game of his life," Lafon said.
In the reserve game, South Point won 35-34 as Chase McWhorter scored 12 and Rocky Roe 10. Chris Brown's 30-footer at the buzzer gave the Pointers the win.
Mike Stapleton had 17 points and Zach Morrison 11 for the Panthers.
