SOUTH POINT - The Rock Hill Redmen took control to remain in control.
The Redmen controlled the game's tempo and as a result remained in control of the Ohio Valley Conference standings with a 54-35 win Tuesday over the South Point Pointers.
"That's the name of our game," Redmen coach Marty Mills said. "But that's what every team tries to do. We limited our turnovers and we limited their second and third shots.
"This bunch of kids understand their roles and the idea of team concept."
South Point coach Mark Lafon offered no excuses.
"Our kids played hard, but Rock Hill played hard and did what they had to do to win. They controlled the tempo," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said. "They hit some big shots and they made some key plays."
K.C. Christian scored 17 points for the Redmen, who are 7-3 overall and lead the OVC at 3-0. Rickie McDonie had a big game with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Derrick Martin added 11 points.
Seth Craft and Aaron Quinn scored 10 points each for the Pointers (4-7, 1-2).
The Pointers shot just 32 percent from the field.
"Our press didn't hurt them and we couldn't buy a perimeter shot," Lafon said.
Christian scored seven points in the first quarter as Rock Hill went up 14-9.
Neither team could find the basket in the second quarter and the Redmen were up 19-13 at the break.
"We didn't have a good offensive flow the first half. We did a better job the second half. Rickie McDonie stepped up and played really well. Derrick had another big night rebounding, K.C. had another solid night, and several other guys stepped up," Mills said.
Rock Hill extended its lead to 32-22 after three quarters despite six points by Quinn.
McDonie scored seven points in the fourth quarter as the Redmen continued to pull away.
A key for the Redmen in the fourth quarter was their foul shooting. They made 12 of 18 with Zach Mullins hitting 4 of 4, McDonie sinking three and Donald Cade and Christian two each.
In the reserve game, South Point won 46-37 as J.T. Terry scored 19 points and Rocky Roe 11. Nick Snavely had 18 to lead Rock Hill.
