Adjustments key Redmen past Flyers

By making the St. Joseph Flyers do what they didn't want to do, the Rock Hill Redmen did just what they wanted.
Rock Hill forced an up-tempo
second half, triggered by 11 Flyer turnovers, as they rallied to beat St. Joseph 78-68 Tuesday night.
"We wore them down and forced them to take some shots they didn't want to take," Redmen coach Marty Mills said.
St. Joseph held a 3-point lead at the half and extended the lead to five at the start of the second half. That's when Rock Hill went on a 14-2 run to take a 40-33 lead with 3:58 left in the quarter.
"We made a good adjustment at halftime," Mills said. "St. Joe was changing its defenses the first half. They did good job. We made some adjustments and did a good job with it. I was real pleased with the way our kids adjusted."
Derrick Martin came off the bench to score 21 points, Sean Mullins scored 13, and Rickie McDonie had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Rock Hill (9-4). K.C. Christian added 12 points, four assists, and three steals.
"We got strong performances from Rickie McDonie and K.C. Christian, and Sean Mullins played very well. He took the ball strong to basket," Mills said.
Shawn Hacker had a game-high 32 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead the Flyers (2-11). Michael Basedow came off the bench to score 13 points while Alex Swarts pulled down 11 rebounds.
"I was real pleased with our effort," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said. "We had a bad third quarter, but otherwise our young kids played well against a senior team.
"Rock Hill plays aggressive defense. Their physical strength and play just wore us down. Give them a lot of credit. They played well."
Hacker scored 12 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph led throughout, including 16-14 at the end of the stanza.
Rock Hill took a 22-20 lead on back-to-back layups by Martin, but Basedow scored four points as the Flyers went back on top.
A layup by Ryan Schwab and a foul shot by Hacker put St. Joseph up 29-26 at the half.
Donald Cade's foul shot put Rock Hill up 40-33 with 3:58 on the clock.
The lead grew to 10 points on a layup by Mullins, but a 3-pointer and layup by Basedow closed the gap to 53-44 at the end of the third quarter.
Schwab's 3-pointer to begin the fourth quarter narrowed the gap to 53-48, but the Redmen scored six straight to open up some breathing room at 59-48. Rock Hill led by as many as 16 points before Hacker scored six straight points and Lewis five straight to make it 77-69.
In the reserve
game, Rock Hill won 59-49 in overtime as Nick Snavely scored 22 and Artie Mullins 11. Ryan Waginger scored 13 while Clay Crum and Michael Basedow had 11 each for the Flyers.
