ATHENS - What four Chesapeake Panther wrestlers didn't see didn't hurt them.
Playing against unfamiliar competition, four Panthers placed in the Athens Deno Classic Saturday.
Larry McDonald was second in the 189-pound class to lead Chesapeake. Bryan Eldred was fourth at 171, Brad Eldred took sixth in the 160 division and Chris Ridenour finished seventh at 103.
"It was a pretty good tournament. There was good competition. There were a lot of people we haven't seen before, so that was a good thing," Chesapeake coach Phil Davis said.
Nelsonville-York won the team title with 127 points followed by Warren Local at 122, Gallipolis 121, and Pt. Pleasant (W.Va.) 120.
The rest of the field was River Valley 105, Logan 91, Fairfield Union 88, Athens 77, Morgan 76, Chesapeake 34, Vinton County 31, Jackson 18, Prestonsburg, Ky., 14, and Trimble and Meigs tied with 3.
"We were a little erratic at times. We should have had a couple of others place. Brad wrestled a great match and lost in overtime, or he would have placed higher," Davis said.
"Brad had an injury and lost by default. But everyone wrestled five times, so that was a good experience for them."
Chesapeake and River Valley wrestle at Fairland Wednesday in the Ohio Valley Conference Tri-Match.
