Ironton Middle School students will have new opportunities for hands-on science learning, thanks to three area businesses.
Duke Energy has awarded the school's science department a $5,000 grant, Dow Chemical Co. has awarded the school a $2,000 grant and the Liebert Corporation has agreed to donate $500 a month for materials as well as labor for a couple of projects.
Ironton Middle School Principal Kim Imes said the grants will be used to buy new science lab supplies, educational computer software and items that will be used in the school's Land Lab.
"The teachers can use these things to help students better understand science concepts at a deeper level rather than just memorizing facts," Imes said.
In addition to donating money, Liebert employees have volunteered to help clean and organize
lab storage areas and refit the labs with stainless steel counter tops.
The assistance is getting rave reviews from IMS staff, Imes said.
"It's unbelievable that people are willing to help our kids and we are really excited about it," Imes said.
"I'm very proud and very thankful.
"People have no idea the amount of money it takes for education. We simply had no money available for these things. It's exciting to know that these corporations do care about our kids and do care about their education."
