FRANKLIN FURNACE - Three out of four is not bad, but it still left the Green Bobcats a little short.

Despite a gallant effort, Green failed in its upset attempt Tuesday by falling to the first-place Portsmouth East Tartans 69-63.

"We put together a pretty solid first half. We played well at times in the second half," Green coach Kevin Lewis said.

"In the third quarter, we needed to do a little better job defensively, and we had some pretty good looks on offense but couldn't get the ball in the basket."

East outscored Green 17-8 in the pivotal third quarter and the Bobcats couldn't recovered.

Aaron Patten scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds for Green (5-9, 4-5). Brian Ramey had 15 points while Derek Lewis scored 14 points and handed out six assists.

Andrew Conley had a game-high 23 points for East. Dan Downing added 19 points and J.D. King 10.

Conley had eight points as East went ahead 21-18 at the end of the first quarter. Patten scored six to keep Green close.

Conley scored seven more in the second quarter, but Lewis drained a pair of 3-pointers to rally the Bobcats to a 35-34 halftime lead.

Downing's seven points in the third quarter enabled East to rally and take a 51-43 lead.

Derek Lewis had eight points and Patten six as Green tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but Downing and King scored five each as East held on for the win.

"Our kids put together a great effort in the fourth quarter. We just couldn't get the stop we needed. But I'm proud of the way we played, but give East credit. They're a good ball club," coach Lewis said.

Green hosts New Boston in its homecoming game Friday, then plays at Beaver Eastern Saturday in a makeup game.
