SOUTH POINT - The Chesapeake Panthers met their match.
Again.
For the second time this season, South Point got a win over the Panthers as the Pointers came away with a 46-41 victory in an Ohio Valley Conference game Friday.
Earlier this season, the Pointers won at Chesapeake and snapped a 7-year home winning streak by the Panthers. South Point proved the win was no fluke with their first sweep of the Panthers since the 1989-90 season.
South Point Coach Mark Lafon said his team's personnel
creates some mismatches for the Panthers.
"It's all about matchups," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said. "With all the teams we play, we match up better with (Chesapeake) than any team on our schedule."
Jay Graham led the Pointers with 16 points including four 3-pointers. Seth Craft, playing despite the flu, had nine points and 10 rebounds, and Quentin Smith added nine points. Justin Workman had seven rebounds to go with a strong defensive effort.
Graham's hot shooting the first half helped the Pointers celebrate Senior Night in style.
"I was just feeling it," Graham said. "I wanted to do everything I could to win this game. It's my senior year and last home game. I stepped up and shot the ball.
"It's a great feeling. We've been thinking about this game for two weeks. Everyone was up for this game."
Brennan Hall had 16 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Panthers. Daniel Thompson added 14 points and four steals.
"In a big game, you need to step up and we didn't," Panthers coach Norm Persin said. "But this is high school basketball. Those things happen.
"I thought Hall kept us in the game, and (Justin) Porter did a good job defensively. Thompson played well in spurts, but that was about it for us. You have to give South Point the credit for that."
Despite the loss, Chesapeake is still on top in the OVC with a 6-2 record. The Panthers fell to 15-2 overall. South Point is now 8-10 and 4-3.
Graham's 3-pointer at the 6:23 mark of the first quarter made it 5-4 and gave the Pointers a lead that stood until late in the fourth quarter. Smith's running pushed the lead to 14-7 at the end of the quarter.
A 3-pointer by Graham with 5:24 left in the half staked the Pointers to their biggest lead of the game, 23-11. A 14-footer by Hall and foul shot by Andy Stapleton following a steal by Thompson got the Panthers within 27-21 at the half.
"What helped was getting a lead," Lafon said. "When Chesapeake gets a lead, they play with so much confidence. With the lead we can start mixing up our defenses and get them thinking."
A layup by Thompson closed the gap to 35-31 at the end of the third quarter, and the Panthers came all the way back to tie the game at 35-35 on a short jumper by Hall with 3:17 to play.
But Smith hit an 8-footer, Graham drained another 3-pointer, and Craft nailed a 15-footer and suddenly it was 42-35 with 1:46 to go.
Thompson's trifecta stopped the run and made it 42-38, but Smith sank both ends of a one-and-one. Thompson had another 3-pointer and it was 44-41.
Workman was fouled and hit both shots with 32 seconds left, and Chesapeake failed to connect on its final two shots.
"When it's Chesapeake, the kids know you have to bring your best game," Lafon said. "It's doesn't matter if it's Senior Night or what day it is. It could be Groundhog's Day. I will say when it came down to the last couple of minutes it made a difference. I heard them in the huddle say we're going out with a win."
