RIO GRANDE - Winfield won the meet, but the day belonged to Justin Gillum and Derique Bacon.

Gillum, a senior, cleared 13-feet, 7-inches to set a new Ironton Fighting Tigers school pole vault record as he won the event at the annual Gallipolis Rotary Relays Saturday.

Bacon didn't set records, but he turned in a stellar performance as he won the 200 (23.5 seconds) and 400 (51.7) meter dashes and also ran a leg on the second place 4×400 relay team. Bacon teamed with Shane Kerns, D.J. Carter, and Shawon Miller to run a 1:36.2 time.

"I said earlier this week Gillum was going to break the school record and he did," Ironton coach Greg Cronacher said after Gillum went one inch higher than the old mark set by Rusty Mittendorf.

"Bacon is capable of setting a record. He can run faster than he has. It'll be interesting to see him run at the end of the season."

Ironton freshman John Pemberton won the discus with a personal best of 123 feet and one-half inch. Josh Carty had his best throws as he finished third in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Shane Kerns was second in the long jump with a season-best jump of 20-5 and one-half. He led until the final jump.

Winfield won with 231 points, River Valley had 100, and Ironton was third with 83.5 points.

"We had a lot of people step up and perform well. It was a good team effort," Cronacher said.

In the girls meet, the short-handed Lady Tigers were fifth but has some solid performances.

Junior distance runner Brianna McCown topped the list as she ran a 2:36.6 in the 800 to finish second.

"Brianna ran well. The two girls from Winfield beather before, but she split them up this time. I was very pleased with her effort," Lady Tigers coach Tim Thomas said.

Ironton's 4×100 relay team of Lissa Hensley, Madison McDaniels, Katie Harper, and Kim Murphy was third at 58.7 seconds. Harper took a second place in the pole vault as she cleared 6-6.

Finishing fourth were the 4×200 relay team of Rachel Walker, Hensley, McDaniels, and Murphy, the 4×400 team of Kayla Brislin, Rachael Payne, McCown, and Murphy, and the 4×800 team of Brittany Walker, McCown, Payne, and Brislin.

Ironton runs at the Coal Grove Giovanni's Pizza Invitational Tuesday.
