Fairland edges Russell, 4-3

FLATWOODS, Ky. - The Russell Lady Red Devils got an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip past the Fairland Lady Dragons 4-3 Monday.

"You hate to lose any game, but Russell is a good team and it will only make us better," Fairland coach Leroy Baise said.

Fairland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Megan Fisher singled to start the game, stole second, took third when Kristen Clausing reached on an error and came home when Erika Smoot was safe on an error.

Russell tied the game with a run in the fourth inning only to have Fairland come back in the sixth to go up 2-1.

Kate Nida walked and pinch-runner Allison Hager went to third on a fielder's choice by Ashley Ward and pinch-runner Marie Stewart got in a rundown allowing Hager to score.

But the Lady Red Devils rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to go in front 3-2.

The Lady Dragons battled back to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

Mandy Clark singled and Clausing walked. A passed ball moved the runners up and Erika Smoot was safe on an error as the run scored.

But Russell got an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to win when Walker singled, went to second on an error and scored on Lunsford's base hit.
