ASHLAND, Ky. - It was a numbers game, and the numbers just didn't quite add up for the Ironton Fighting Tigers.

Despite lacking the depth of Boyd County, Ironton almost pulled off a stunning upset Tuesday in the Ohio-Kentucky Athletic Conference track meet.

Boyd County won the meet with 79.5 points, just one point ahead of Ironton. Ashland finished with 77 points and Portsmouth had 32.

"All our kids gave a great effort," Ironton coach Greg Cronacher said. "They all volunteered just so we would have someone in each event. It was a total team effort."

Senior Derique Bacon turned in the top performance for Ironton as he finished second in the high point award with 19.5, just behind Boyd County's Jeff Bowling who had 24 points.

Bacon won the 200 (24.0 seconds), 400 (53.7) and 100 (11.6) dashes, and ran a leg on the winning 4×200 relay team (1:39.1) along with Shawon Miller, D.J. Carter and Shane Kerns.

"The times weren't too bad considering the cold and wind," Cronacher said.

Ben Murphy won the shot put with a heave of 49-4 and one-half inches and Justin Gillum cleared 13-6 to win the pole vault.

Also taking first place were Ironton's 4×100 relay team of Aaron Hasenauer, Darrien Gantt, Branden Sites and Shawn Rucker (47.9) and the 4×400 teams of Sites, Rucker, Miller and Kerns with a 3:55 clocking.

Boyd County also won the girls meet with 88.5 points to runner-up Portsmouth with 75.5 points. Ironton finished with 55 points and Ashland had 47.

"We just didn't have the depth of the other teams," Lady Tigers coach Tim Thomas said. "Our girls stepped up and did a super job. I can't complain about our effort."

Freshmen Mandi Boykin and Rachel Walker combined to produce 25 of Ironton's points.

Boykin won both the 100 (13.1) and 200 (27.6) meter dashes. Walker won the discus with a toss of 90-5, was second in the shot put at 27-11, tied teammate Ciara Taylor for fourth in the 200 (28.9), and ran a leg on the 4×100 relay team with Kim Murphy, Krista Markel and Katie Washburn, which finished second with a time of 57.3 seconds.

Brianna McCown also came away with a first-place finish in the 1600 with a 6:02.4 clocking.

Ironton's other first place finish was in the 4×400 relay as Rachael Payne, Taylor, Murphy and McCown had a 4:35.2 winning time.

Alayna Tackett of Boyd County won meet high point honors with 21 points.
