DENVER (AP) - After appealing his suspension, Alex Gonzalez homered and Josh Beckett pitched seven innings Wednesday, leading the Florida Marlins to a 9-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Gonzalez was suspended three games for his part in a bench-clearing brawl last week in Philadelphia. He will not serve the penalty until a hearing is held.
Beckett (2-2) gave up four runs and struck out seven. The World Series MVP avoided losing three straight starts for the second time in his career.
Jason Jennings (1-3) was tagged for six runs and walked four in five innings.
Miguel Cabrera, Mike Lowell and Hee Seop Choi also homered for the Marlins.
Pirates 4, Astros 2
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Raul Mondesi hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning and Josh Fogg shook off three consecutive terrible starts to lead Pittsburgh.
Fogg, who entered the game with a 17.00 ERA, outpitched Houston ace Roy Oswalt (2-1). Fogg limited the Astros to two runs in seven innings, while Oswalt gave up four runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings.
The Pirates were hitless in their last 17 at-bats with runners in scoring position before Mondesi's two-run double off Oswalt.
Salomon Torres (1-0) followed Fogg with a scoreless eighth for the victory. Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his sixth save.
Phillies 6, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marlon Byrd scored the go-ahead run on an infield grounder in the ninth and Philadelphia rookie Ryan Madson threw four innings of one-hit relief for the win.
David Bell doubled off Mike Lincoln (2-2) to start the winning rally. After a sacrifice, Byrd pinch ran for Bell and scored on Ricky Ledee's groundout.
Jim Thome added a two-run single, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Madson (1-1) allowed only an infield hit to Reggie Sanders in the sixth. Billy Wagner worked the ninth for his sixth save.
Edgar Renteria had two RBIs for the Cardinals, who fell to 3-9 at home, their worst start since 1990.
Cubs 4, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX (AP) - Alex Gonzalez's home run in the ninth for Chicago spoiled a three-homer effort by Arizona's Steve Finley.
Gonzalez homered off Matt Mantei (0-3) to help the Cubs avoid a sweep after Finley's third solo shot had tied it in the eighth. He also homered in the second and the sixth.
It was Finley's fourth career three-homer game and first since Sept. 6, 1999, at Milwaukee.
Danny Bautista doubled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.
Arizona's Richie Sexson injured his left shoulder when he swung at a pitch in the eighth inning. He left the game and the extent of the injury wasn't immediately known.
Dodgers 3, Mets 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Dave Roberts hit a two-run homer and Adrian Beltre added a solo shot to lift Los Angeles.
Odalis Perez (2-1) allowed seven hits and walked two in six innings, but held New York to one run after Kazuo Matsui's leadoff homer.
Eric Gagne got the last four outs for his sixth save in as many chances this season - and 69th save in a row dating to Aug. 28, 2002.
Jason Phillips hit a liner off Gagne's right leg in the eighth with a runner on second and two outs, but the reliever fielded the ball and threw out Phillips at first before limping off the field. He stayed in for the ninth and gave up consecutive two-out singles before finishing the game.
Steve Trachsel (2-3) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings for the Mets.
Giants 10, Braves 7
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Michael Tucker had three hits, including a home run, and San Francisco avoided losing its fourth straight series.
The Giants scored nine runs in the fourth, seven coming against ex-teammate Russ Ortiz (2-3). Pedro Feliz singled twice, scored twice and drove in a run in the inning and the Giants sent 14 batters to the plate.
Barry Bonds went 1-for-3 with two intentional walks and was the only Giants player without a hit until he singled to right in the eighth.
Brett Tomko (1-1) gave up six runs in six-plus innings, but still picked up the win.
Bonds was intentionally walked for the 500th time in his career in the fourth. Hank Aaron is second on the career list with 293.
Padres 5, Expos 4
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Khalil Greene hit an RBI triple to cap a three-run rally in the eighth.
Greene's triple off Luis Ayala (0-4) scored Ramon Hernandez.
Montreal's Jamey Carroll had a career-high four hits and Andy Fox hit a solo homer as baseball's worst-hitting team set a season high with 13 hits.
Antonio Osuna (1-0) pitched the eighth for the win. Trevor Hoffman finished up for his fifth save.
Brian Giles and Phil Nevin hit solo homers for the Padres.
