CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Chesapeake Panthers had to battle the clock in more ways than just on the track.

With several team members needing to race home for the prom, the Panthers beat the clock on the track as they won a second straight Charleston Gazette Relays Class A championship Saturday.

The Panthers racked up 115.5 points to finish ahead of Doddrige County which had 93.5 points.

"I give those guys a lot of credit," Panthers coach Phil Davis said. "We talked about it two weeks ago. I told them if

you want to go to the meet, go. If you can't do anything on Saturday, let me know and we'll let someone else run.

"But if you leave early, you'll have to get your parents to come and get you. To their credit, they made the arrangements."

Only the regular 4×100 relay team was unable to run due to the time constraints.

"Everyone stepped up and did a great job," Davis said.

Jeff Thornburg led the Panthers with 24 points, second in high point honors. Thornburg was second in the long jump (18-5) and 300 hurdles (42.86) and third in the 110 hurdles (16.69).

Chesapeake's Tristin Clark won the 100 meter dash while teammate Cody Hunt was third. Scott Davidson claimed first place in the pole vault as he cleared a meet record 13 feet. Vernon Browning was fifth in the pole vault.

The Panthers also set a meet record in the 4×200 relay as Hunt, Clark, Joey Hamlin and Chad Simmons ran a 1:36.11 time to take first place.

In the boys Class AA meet, Winfield won the meet easily with South Point taking fifth place with 46 points and Ironton finished 10th with 18 points.

Chris Smith led the Pointers as he won the shot put (52-4 and one-half) and discus (142-4).

Steven Leighty cleared 13-6 to take first place in the pole vault while Quentin Smith was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 100 meters for the Pointers.

Derique Bacon and Justin Gillum turned in Ironton's top performances.

Bacon was sixth in the 100 meters (11.67) and fourth in the 400 (52.20). He also joined Shane Kerns, D.J. Carter and Shawon Miller on the 4×200 relay team that had a 1:36.62 clocking to take sixth place. Gillum was second in the pole vault at 13-feet.

The South Point Lady Pointers were fourth in the girls Class AA meet with 33.5 points and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers were sixth with 31.

The Lady Pointers were led by Porcha Ball and Sarah Lee.

Ball won the 100 meter dash at 12.77 seconds, just edging Ironton's Mandi Boykin who ran a 12.79. Lee leaped 16-feet to win the long jump and tied for fifth in the high jump.

Jessi Craft went 4-10 to place third in the high jump for South Point.

Boykin also placed sixth in the 200 and teammate Ciara Taylor was fifth in the 400 meters for the Lady Tigers.

Ironton's 4×100 relay had its fastest time of the season at 52.08 seconds. Ironton coach Tim Thomas said the group of Boykin, Taylor, Kim Murphy and Rachel Walker was packaged together late last week.

"They've only been working together a couple of days, and Mandi has a bad ankle and a bad hip, so that's we can get better," Thomas said.

Placing second was the 4×400 relay squad of Taylor, Murphy, Rachael Payne, Brianna McCown with a 4:27.06 clocking.

Brianna McCown was sixth in the 1600 meter run with her best time of the season at 5:48.10.

The 4×200 relay of Katie Harper, Lissa Hensley, Krista Markel and Katie Washburn ran a 2:01.28 time to place sixth, and the shuttle hurdle quartet of

Madison McDaniels, Harper, Washburn and Markel combined for a 1:18 time to finish sixth.

Chesapeake will host its relay meet Tuesday.
