SAN DIEGO - Ken Griffey Jr. is happy to face David Wells.

Griffey hit his eighth homer off Wells, his most off any pitcher, in helping the Cincinnati Reds over the San Diego Padres 6-3 Tuesday night.

''Wells is a guy who comes right after you,'' said Griffey, who hit a solo homer leading off the second inning. ''He's a battler, a competitor. He's out there every fifth day, and he's going to give you everything he's got. He's not going to give in to anybody.''

Griffey is 22-for-72 (.306) against Wells in his career with 12 extra-base hits, including four doubles. The homer was his seventh this season.

''He's hit me pretty well through the years,'' Wells said. ''If you don't make your pitches to Junior, he's going to make you pay for it. He's got my number, but I still have to pitch to him, I don't want to walk him.''

Adam Dunn tied for the major league lead with his 11th homer, helping back San Diego native Aaron Harang (3-1), who allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.

''My changeup was working really well tonight, I was able to keep that down in the zone,'' said Harang, who won 9-5 at San Diego last season in his Reds' debut.

''You always feel a little more comfortable knowing that you have more than your wife sitting in the stands cheering for your,'' Harang said. ''I had 25 on the pass list tonight, and it was great hearing them cheer whenever I did something good.''

John Riedling and Todd Jones followed Harang with one inning each, and Danny Graves finished for his major league-leading 14th save in 17 chances.

Sean Burroughs was 3-for-3 for San Diego and reached base four times.

Wells (2-3) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs and five hits, including four for extra bases.

Harang, 1-for-34 in his career at the plate coming in, doubled leading off the third. After right fielder Brian Giles dropped a fly ball by D'Angelo Jimenez, Harang scored on an infield single by Barry Larkin that went off Wells' glove.

Burroughs' RBI infield single in the bottom half pulled the Padres to 2-1, and Mark Loretta's two-run double put San Diego ahead in the fifth.

Dunn then hit a two-run homer in the sixth for a 4-3 lead following a leadoff walk to Griffey, restored to the cleanup slot in the order for the second straight game.

''I think I gave him too good a pitch to hit in that situation,'' Wells said. ''I felt good at that time and felt 21 again, like I could throw 95 (mph), but it was only about 84.''

Tim Hummel added a two-run single off Antonio Osuna in the eighth, runs charged to Eddie Oropesa. Hummel faced nine pitches, all fastballs, before his hit.
