Simpson resigns as Flyers coach

For Adam Simpson, it was a matter of choosing between his family and his basketball family.
The choice was obvious.
Citing family commitments, Simpson resigned as the St. Joseph High School boys basketball coach after three seasons.
"I've got two kids including one that's nine-months old. I had to do what is best for the family. I'm not going to say I'm done with coaching, but little kids and coaching don't mix right now," Simpson said.
Simpson was an assistant coach for seven years at Rock Hill before taking the St. Joseph job. He said getting a head coaching position was his goal, which made resigning even more difficult. He also said his experience at St. Joseph was extremely positive.
"This is a great place to coach. The people at St. Joseph are so supportive. The fans would wait if you won or loss. It's one of the toughest decisions I've had to make," Simpson said.
Simpson thanked athletic director Pat Sheridan and principal Jim Mains for their support.
"With Pat and Jim, I can't think of any better administrator. I couldn't ask for two more professional people to work for. They're numbers challenged every year, and they packed the gym and supported the team and they supported me. I can't say enough about the people there," Simpson said.
The Flyers were 3-16 last season, but had just one senior starter. St. Joseph also started two freshmen and two sophomores.
"The young kids got a lot of experience and we have some young kids coming. This will be a good job for someone," Simpson said.
Sheridan said he accepted Simpson's resignation with regret, but understood his reasons.
"Not only did Adam do an excellent job, he is a quality person who instilled that type of character into our players," St. Joseph athletic director Pat Sheridan said. "You hate to lose people of that caliber."
Applications for the position are available in the high school principal's office. No hiring timetable has been set.
