FLATWOODS, Ky. - It was Senior Night, only this time it was on the road.
Seniors Stephanie Burns, Cassie Myers and Kayla Bowman had key hits as the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings beat the Russell Lady Red Devils 3-2 in eight innings Tuesday.
"I told the seniors in the eighth inning that this was their chance to step up and show that they are seniors and they did," Lady Vikings coach Jeff "Odie" Estep said.
"We hit the ball hard up and down the lineup, we just couldn't hit the gaps. But they beat us 5-1 the first time, so it was nice to get a little revenge."
The Lady Vikings got the winning run with no outs.
Myers opened the eighth by reaching on an error and came around to score when Burns tripled.
Symmes Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Myers had a leadoff single and Burns was safe on a throwing error. Lori Harmon put down a sacrifice bunt and Bowman followed with an RBI single. Rebecca Capper reached on an error as Burns scored the second run.
Russell tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning.
Harmon went the distance to get the win. She struck out 11, walked just one and allowed only two hits. Bowman was 2-4 to lead all hitters.
Symmes Valley, 18-5, plays Reedsville Eastern at 6 p.m. Thursday at Minford in the Division IV district semifinals.
