Alleged scam artist indicted by grand jury

A West Virginia man wanted in connection with a local scam involving the elderly was one of six people indicted Thursday by a Lawrence County grand jury, according to information from the office of
Lawrence County Prosecutor J.B. Collier.
Matthew Shane Seal, 19, of Kimball, was indicted on
three counts of first-degree theft. Kimball is accused of
allegedly stealing $18,000 from an Ironton woman. The woman told police Seal knocked on her door and told her that her roof was leaking. After speaking with her for a while and obtaining her confidence, Seal allegedly convinced the woman to sign three personal checks, leaving the amounts on each check blank so he could fill in the amount himself. No repairs were ever made to the woman's roof. Seal allegedly is part of a larger regional crime ring.
Also indicted:
€ Deanna Burton, a.k.a. Deanna Michelle Lewis Saxton, 30, of 315 1/2 Mulberry St., was indicted on one count of second-degree trafficking in crack cocaine within the vicinity of a school and one count of third-degree possession of crack. Burton was arrested in October 2003 on drug charges after authorities raided her residence. When she pleaded guilty to those charges later that month, Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Richard Walton ordered Lewis to successfully undergo drug rehabilitation at the Rural Women's Recovery Program and then sentenced her to four years community controlled sanctions under intensive supervised probation. She was arrested a second time in May after local authorities allegedly went to her residence to arrest her on a probation violation and found eight grams of crack in her purse.
€ Michael Evans, 22, of Huntington, W.Va., was indicted on one count of fifth-degree theft. He allegedly took approximately $600 in cash from the K-Mart store while he was employed there.
€ Cynthia Morgan, 46, of 117 Memorial St. Coal Grove, was indicted on one count of fourth-degree theft. She allegedly took money from a patient while working as a home health aide.
€ Buddy Miller, 19, of 703 S. Ninth St., Ironton, was indicted on one count of fourth-degree grand theft and one count of fifth-degree breaking and entering. He allegedly took an automobile from the Ironton Police Department impound lot.
€ Joseph Baker, 24, of 1438 County Road 6, Ironton, was indicted on three counts of fifth-degree felony forgery, one count of fifth-degree receiving stolen property, one count of fifth-degree theft and a misdemeanor count of criminal damaging. He allegedly broke into a car and stole a woman's purse, and then used the woman's
credit card to make purchases at local stores.
