COAL GROVE - A great night filled with great racing.

The setting was great last week at Rocky Top Raceway and the races matched the weather. The car counts were up as some of the most talented area drivers rode the high banks.

Kenny Christy took his second straight Fast Qualifier award to start off the late models, but he started last in the fast dash due to the inverting of the field. Terry Hicks and Tom Hall started on the front row and remained 1-2 for three laps before Hall began to pull away.

Hall won the race over Hicks, Josh McGuire and Nick Bocook

- who passed brother Josh on the last corner - and Christy. That set up the first three rows for the late model feature.

In the heat race, regular modified driver Adam Colley made his RTR late model debut in grand style by winning the race. John Melvin was second and Joe Ramey third.

In the second late model heat race, Kevin Wagner ran away with the win over Tony Hamilton and Brandon Queen to set the field set for the 20-lap feature.

In the A-main, Tom Hall and Terry Hicks jumped to the lead, but Josh McGuire caught Hall before the end of the first lap. McGuire finally cleared Hall for the lead.

Christy charged into fourth place only to have the leaders in traffic and the first caution came out as Tony Rubey suffered problems.

There were several periods of cautions the next three laps, but on lap nine Josh Bocook caused the second caution to be signaled. Because of the two caution rule, Bocook was done for the night.

When the green came back, McGuire resumed a decent lead as Hall, Christy and Nick Bocook continued to battle and changed positions several times throughout the race.

As the battle raged, McGuire took a huge lead and won his first A-main at Rocky Top.

David Jenkins had the first Fast Qualifier award to start the modifieds, but in the modified fast dash David Fitzpatrick held the lead over the first two laps. David Jenkins, sixth due to the inverted start, went on to win over Fitzpatrick, Randy Boggs and Billy Dement, thus giving him the pole for the 20-lap A-main.

In the first heat race, Todd Robinson put a slide job on Kelley that proved to be the winning pass as he won the first modified heat race. Kelley was second ahead of Scott Linville.

In the second heat, Dan Aldridge got a big win over Greg Thompson and Marcus Murray and set the A-main field.

Dave Kelley would finish second over Scott Linville. In the second heat race, Dan Aldridge would take the win big time over Greg Thompson and Marcus Murray. That would set the field for the A-main.

Jenkins got off to a huge lead the first five laps to start the modified A-main. Meanwhile, Randy Boggs moved into second with Robinson a close third. On lap six, Jenkins pulled off the track with problems and Boggs inherited the lead.

Eddie Harmon moved into second place while Tony Sites' bad luck streak continued and he pulled off the track on lap 12.

On the restart, Harmon got inside of Boggs going into turn three but could not make the pass which allowed Boggs to win his third modified A-main of the season. Harmon was second followed by Robinson, Jason Perry and Dement.

There would be no limited late model class due to the low car count.

In the Bombers, Conrad Newman took the first heat race over Brett Carey and James Ross. David Dunn won the second heat race.

In the A-main, Newman and Carey had a great battle for the lead the entire race. Carey tried to get pass Newman as he went inside and outside trying to find a fast line.

Carey finally got beside Newman in turns three and four but could not pass as "Mr. Smooth" Newman won his ninth feature at RTR.

Rocky Top Raceway will hold its final race of the season Friday. Late models will pay $1,200 to win, modifieds $800, limited late models $500 and bombers $400.
