WESTWOOD, Ky. - Two plays were the difference in the Coal Grove Hornets getting win No. 2.

A long kickoff return set up one touchdown and an interception provided a second score as the Fairview Eagles held on to beat Coal Grove 20-14 Friday night.

"They just made two nice plays and that was the difference," Hornets coach David Lucas said.

"I was proud of our effort. Our kids played a real good game. I couldn't ask any more out of them. We made some big defensive stands and we had chances to score. Fairview has a good team. Give them a lot of credit."

Coal Grove drew first blood when Justin Hyland ran 4 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. The score was set up by a fumble recovery.

An interception return off a tipped pass put Fairview deep in Coal Grove territory and John Tibb scored on a 20-yard run to tie the game. Bradlee Jones ran for the conversion and Fairview led 8-6.

Fairview (1-2) came back to score quickly on a 62-yard pass from Brett Cooksey to Branden Hutchinson and it was 14-6 at the break.

The Eagles ran the second half kickoff back 66 yards to set up a 4-yard run by Brett Cooksey and extend their lead to 20-6.

But Coal Grove wasn't about to quit. The Hornets answered with a 71-yard, 10-play scoring drive capped by Brian Massie's 4-yard touchdown run

Hyland ran for the conversion and it was 20-14 but the Hornets could get no closer.

Coal Grove ran 46 times for 221 yards with Hyland posting game-high numbers of 25 carries for 158 yards. Massie finished with 38 yards on eight attempts.

"I'm sure that we will not face too many backs as good as Hyland," Fairview coach Chad Tackett said. "He shows great tenacity and never gave up all night. The worst part for us is we've got to face him next season."

Hornets starting quarterback Ryan Turvey suffered an injury and backup Eric Davidson took over. Davidson hit 2 of 4 passes for 11 yards and ran eight times for 18 yards.

The loss evened Coal Grove's record at 1-1. Fairview is now 1-2.
