Injuries plague Dragons in loss

PROCTORVILLE - The loss on the field may not be as bad as the loss of players.

A season-ending injury to Jerad Burgess plus additional injuries to Todd Maynard and Sam Huff further dampened a 57-26 shootout loss to the Winfield Generals Friday night.

"We lost Burgess for the year, Huff went out, and Maynard is possibly gone for awhile," Fairland coach Brent Wilcoxon said. "It's tough to lose three top players. Hopefully, we can regroup and get a 'W' on the board next week."

The losses will be felt in the Dragons passing attack. Maynard had eight catches for 119 yards and Huff three for 43 in Friday's loss. Quarterback Michael Hill was 21 of 33 for 239 yards with three interceptions.

Winfield quarterback T.J. Asbury hit 11 of 19 for 209 yards and an interception. The Generals also ran for 243 yards as Jared Anderson had 141 yards on 17 attempts and Brett Pauley 95 on nine tries.

Pauley ran 2 yards to cap a six-play, 80-yard drive to open the game and it was 6-0.

Pauley recovered a fumble at the 37 and two plays later Asbury hit Greg Coleman on a 26-yard scoring play for a 12-0 lead.

Brendan Langstorf recovered a fumble in the end zone to put the Generals ahead 18-0 to start the second quarter. A short 45-yard drive ended with a 4-yard run by Anderson and the conversion pass put the lead at 26-0.

Another fumble recovery at the 4-yard line led to a 4-yard run by Josh Phelps and it was 32-0.

Fairland finally got going on a 42-yard pass from Hill to Huff that set up a 12-yard pass to Wes Ripley. Although Ripley fumbled at the one, Deryk Neal ran the ball into the end zone and it was 32-6.

Winfield answered with an eight-play, 49-yard drive as Asbury hit Josh Taylor on a 30-yard pass with 44 seconds left.

Burgess came up with an interception and Hill ran 16 yards for a touchdown to start the second half scoring and it was 38-12.

But Winfield came right back with an 83-yard scoring drive and build an insurmountable 44-12 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
