Local businesses may soon earn a few of those 15 minutes of fame American pop artist Andy Warhol promised.

One of the first projects created by the Designing Our Future, Ironton Beautification Committee is a recognition program intended to reward businesses that have worked to keep their businesses in tip-top shape.

"Our hope is to encourage other businesses to clean up and pick up," said committee member George Sisler. "More or less, we'd like them to compete."

Businesses chosen for the monthly award will receive a certificate from the group, Sisler said.

"We hope they'll like the advertisement aspect of the award as well," said committee member Joan Slagel.

Nominees will come both from committee members and suggestions from the general public.

Businesses will be judged based on a combination of the outside appearance, the window display and appeal and the general "neatness" of the business inside and out.

The committee is one of three teams formed during the Designing Our Future leadership seminar in late August. The other two groups formed include one focusing on communication leadership issues and another focuses on ways to improve the travel and tourism industry in Lawrence County.

The seminar was co-sponsored by Ohio University Southern, the Briggs-Lawrence County Public Library System and The Ironton Tribune.
