The trial of an Ironton area man accused of murder is scheduled to start Monday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.
Carlos Jenkins, 39, of 842 County Road 180, is charged in connection with the shooting death of John Turvey, 45, of 960 County Road 103 (Ellisonville Ridge Road). Turvey was found dead at his home by the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office on the morning of Sept. 3. Jenkins was arrested two days later.
Sheriff's deputies said Jenkins first denied being in Turvey's house but later confessed to the shooting, saying that he shot Turvey because Turvey had tried to pull a gun on him.
But Jenkins' father, Otis Jenkins, said his son is easily led and tends to tell people what they want to hear to make people happy; he also said his son had no reason to kill Turvey.
Otis Jenkins also said his son hunts in the Lane Ridge-Tunnel Ridge area frequently, therefore it is not unusual that he would have been in the area at the time of the murder.
The Turvey murder is one of seven violent deaths that have occurred in Lawrence County this year.
