BEAVER - Beating the Eastern Lady Eagles was as easy as 1, 2, 3 … things.
The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings stepped up their game in three areas as they beat Beaver Eastern 53-44 in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
"Our press, our defense and our free throw shooting were the difference," Lady Vikings coach Lisa Bryant said. "This is the best defense we've played since I've been here. Our girls played outstanding defense."
Megan Coomes came off the bench to score 17 points and grab eight rebounds for the Vikings. Leslie Floyd had 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals.
"Coomes and Bowling helped out tremendously," Bryant said.
Eastern took an 8-1 lead to start the game and led 17-12 at the end of the quarter. But the Lady Vikings outscored the Eagles 15-7 in the second quarter to take a 27-24 halftime lead.
Ahead 36-34 after three quarters, Coomes converted 5 of 6 from the foul line and Floyd 4 of 6 to seal the win.
Symmes Valley is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SOC.
"This helps right off the bat in our conference. Several teams in our conference will be right there and we need to keep in step. This is a good start for us," Bryant said.
In the reserve game, Symmes Valley won 20-13 as Kayla Saunders scored 10 points Emily Bowling added 5.

FRANKLIN FURNACE - Everybody is getting into the act.
Kortney Pfleger scored 18 points and backup Britnee Fuller added 12 more as the Green Lady Bobcats opened the season with a 53-19 rout of the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans Monday.
"Brittnee Fuller came off the bench and scored 12 points. It's nice to get other people involved," Green coach Melissa Knapp said. "We were a little nervous at first. It took us a while to get going. We missed some easy shots early."
The meeting was also the first Southern Ohio Conference game for both teams.
"It's nice to win the first one, especially since it's a league game," Knapp said.
Elista Hall got 4 points in the first quarter as Green took an 11-2 lead. Pfleger and Fuller had 4 points each in the second quarter as the lead expanded to 25-8 at the break.
Heather Chatfield, who led the Titans with 8 points, got 6 in the second quarter.
Pfleger had 6 more points in the third quarter as the lead went to 40-12. She had 6 more in the fourth quarter.
Green plays at Portsmouth Clay Thursday in a big SOC game. Clay is the preseason favorite.
