Defense gives Redmen opening win over Flyers

PEDRO - The offense started slow, but the defense was as full speed.

The Rock Hill Redmen limited the St. Joseph Flyers to only 15 points in the first half and went on to post a season-opening 57-38 win Friday night.

The Redmen held the Flyers to one basket in the first quarter as they built an 11-2 lead.

St. Joseph managed to get within 22-15 at the half and the Redmen were up just 37-29 after three quarters.

But Rock Hill held the Flyers to only 9 points in the fourth quarter and pulled away to the easy win.K.C. Christian turned in a strong all-around game to lead the Redmen. Christian scored 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had eight assists and three steals.

Nick Snavely added 13 points and four rebounds while Mark Depriest also snared 15 rebounds.

St. Joseph (0-2) was led by Ryan Schwab with 12 points. Michael Basedow scored 7 and Alex Swarts and Jerrod Laber had 6 each.

"We just didn't play well from the opening tip, and yet we were still in the game until a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter. It seemed that one mistake just led to another," Flyers coach Kevin Hacker.

On Tuesday, Rock Hill plays at Coal Grove Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game while St. Joseph hosts Portsmouth Notre Dame.
