It's beginning to look a lot like winter.

Lawrence Countians awoke this morning to falling snow in addition to the bone-chilling cold that has hung around for the last few days. While the snow today is expected to be light, forecasters predict more for the weekend.

Andy Roche, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Charleston, W.Va., said approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches of snow fell this morning by 8 a.m.

"The rest of the day, we can expected showers and then we will have a short respite from the precipitation on Thursday," he said.

Road crews were out early this morning clearing snowfall.

Ohio Department of Transportation Lawrence County Garage Transportation Manager Bill Patrick said eight or nine

crews remained on patrol through the morning rush hour, paying particular attention to hillsides.

The snow was just enough to close some schools.

Fairland, Dawson-Bryant, Symmes Valley, Rock Hill, Chesapeake and South Point all closed their doors. Ironton city and Catholic schools were on a two-hour delay.

Roche said the weekend will be white as well with up to three inches forecasted for the Tri-State between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.

The Charleston area could receive up to six inches and the mountainous areas of Kentucky and West Virginia may see a foot of the fluffy white stuff.
