GALLIPOLIS - Hack was back on track.
And the defense stayed on course.
Sara Hacker had her shooting touch back and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers continued their strong defensive play as they blitzed the Gallipolis Blue Angels 53-33 Monday.
After two subpar shooting games, Hacker hit 9 of 16 field goal attempts and scored 18 points as Ironton ran its record to 17-1. Hacker also had nine rebounds.
On the defensive end, Andrea Rudmann helped slow down Gallipolis leading scorer Jackie Wamsley along with scoring 16 points.
Rudmann, along with relief help from Jessica Waddle and Mandi Boykin, held Wamsley to 3 of 12 shooting from the field. Wamsley had 14 points but six points came from the foul line.
"Hacker shot the ball as well as she has shot all season. We need her back on track heading into the tournament," Ironton coach Amy Hughes said.
"Our defense played well again. Rudy did a nice job on Wamsley after she hit a couple of 3s early And we did a good job on (Kari) James."
James, the Gallipolis 6-foot-4 center, had just 6 points and three rebounds although she did block seven shots.
Ironton looked to take control early with a 7-0 scoring spurt to start the game. Hacker had 6 points as the Lady Fighting Tigers took a 13-6 lead.
Mandi Boykin came up with a steal and a layup with 2:43 left in the half that gave Ironton its biggest lead at 24-11. Two foul shots by Rudmann had Ironton up 30-17 at the half.
Hacker hit a 17-footer, Sarah Cartmell sank a foul shot and Rudmann made a layup to open the second half and extend the lead to 35-17. A layup by Ciara Taylor at the buzzer had Ironton ahead 39-22 at the end of the third quarter.
Rudmann converted a 3-point play to begin the fourth quarter as the lead went to 42-22. Boykin's 15-footer and a layup by Hacker with 3:26 left to play gave Ironton its largest lead of the game at 51-24.
In the reserve game, Gallipolis won 48-35. Jessica Weaver had 11 points and Chelsea Cleary and Kayla Wileman 7 each for Ironton.
