CHESHIRE - Evidently, quit is a four-letter word that the Coal Grove Lady Hornets won't use.

Short-handed and trailing after three quarters, Coal Grove battled back and beat the River Valley Lady Raiders 61-58 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"We're down six on the road, and we had one of our guards miss the trip because she was sick, but the kids hung in there and never quit," Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said.

Coal Grove improved to 10-6 on the season and 4-3 in the OVC. River Valley fell to 3-10 and 1-5.

"I told the girls before the game we can either throw the towel in or go for the best finish in the conference we can get and have a winning record. Hopefully, it's another step in getting our program going in the right direction," Miller said.

Chelsea Markins scored 25 points and Samantha Hall 19 to lead the Lady Hornets.

River Valley had four players in double figures as Beth Payne scored 14, Letea McAvena and Kristina Naylor 12 each, and Ashley Caldwell 10.

Payne and McAvena combined for 11 points in the first quarter as River Valley went up 18-12. Markins had 6 points for the Lady Hornets.

Coal Grove came back to take a 29-26 halftime lead as Markins scored 7 points including a 3-pointer while Hall and Tracy Tackett had 5 points each.
