COAL GROVE - Going back where they were.

The Coal Grove Hornets reverted back to their previous playing style as they held off the St. Joseph Flyers 60-52 Friday.

"Our shot chart finally looked like it needed to after the game. We needed to get on the glass and stop shooting 3s," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said. "We took only 10 shots out of the paint all night and that's what we have to do to be successful. We need to pound it inside and draw fouls."

The Hornets were successful with their game plan as they made 27 of 39 free throws attempts.

Randy Wise led the Hornets with 19 points including 12 of 16 at the line. Justin Hyland added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hyland had 9 points and nine rebounds in the first half.

Ryan Staton had 15 points and Ryan Schwab hit three 3-pointers to pace the Flyers (3-12).

Coal Grove went up 14-5 in the first quarter as Hyland and Adam Bare combined for 8 points.

Matt Melvin and Jim Lemon scored 5 points each in the second quarter as the lead grew to 36-18 at the half.

"It's no secret we haven't been playing well," Humphreys said. "The last few days we've had some intense practices. We wanted to come out from the start and make it an up tempo game. We wanted to get back to doing things we've stopped doing."

Jeremy Addis hit a pair of 3-pointers and a foul shot as the Flyers outscored the Hornets 20-9 in the third quarter and closed the gap to 45-38.

The Flyers continued to battle in the fourth quarter as Kurt Jordan and Staton had 4 points each and Schwab and Michael Basedow hit 3-pointers.

But the Hornet, who were just 1 of 5 from the field in the fourth quarter, converted 13 of 19 free throws as the Flyers were forced to foul. Wise was 6 of 8 at the line.

"The kids did a pretty good job of showing some composure down the stretch," Humphreys said. "They did a workable job of managing the clock and stepping of to the line and making free throws. It's one of those things that's been hurting us.

"Give St. Joe's kids credit. They were down 20 and kept coming back and cut it to three. They fought through some foul trouble and their bench did a good job," Humphreys said.
