After watching the physical play of the Fairland Dragons

in the first quarter, St. Joseph coach Kevin Hacker told his team to match their style of play and the Flyers responded with a 67-54 win Tuesday.

St. Joseph raced to a 7-0 lead to start the game and led 17-12 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Ryan Schwab and 5 points by Jeremy Addis.

But the Dragons came back and outscored the Flyers 12-5 in the second quarter to take a 24-22 halftime lead.

"They made a run at us in the second quarter. They were playing physical, so we told our guys they had to step it up and play physical and they responded," Hacker said.

Ryan Staton had 8 points in the third quarter as the Flyers outscored the Dragons 21-9 to regain the lead at 43-33.

The Flyers converted 14 of 24 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter as the Dragons began to foul. Corey Lewis made 5 of 8 for the Flyers.

"Jeremy Addis played well defensively, and Ryan Staton accepted the challenge on the boards. We told him before the game to clean the glass and he did," Hacker said.

Staton finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Flyers (5-12). Michael Basedow scored 17 points to go with four steals while Lewis had six rebounds and two assists.

Fairland (3-16) was led by Todd Maynard and Josh Johnson with 12 points each. Johnson also had five assists and six rebounds. Zach Pemberton grabbed 11 rebounds and Matt Burd and Wise pulled down six each.

"Our kids played their tails off. I was proud of our effort," Fairland coach Chad Belville said.

The Dragons were just 22 of 74 from the field for 30 percent.
