Error-plagued Panthers lose to South Point, 6-3

CHESAPEAKE - The scoreboard said the South Point Pointers beat Chesapeake, but Panthers head coach Joe Waugh said that wasn't exactly true.

"We gave up five runs in the first two innings and they were because of throwing errors. Chesapeake beat Chesapeake tonight, it's that simple. We had 10 hits, but they weren't very timely," Panthers coach Joe Waugh said.

Chesapeake outhit the Pointers 10 to 4, but the Pointers came away with a 6-3 Ohio Valley Conference win Monday. The Panthers left nine runners on base.

Justin Smith went four innings to get the win while Dale Kinney got the save. Jeff Gilkison struck out 10, walked four and hit three batters as he took the loss.

"Smith did what he had to do. He can hit the corners. He moves the ball inside and out. He does a real good job of that. He keeps the hitters guessing," Waugh said.

South Point got two runs in the first inning on one hit.

Rocky Roe was hit by a pitch and went to third on a wild pickoff throw. Anthony Ross singled to score Roe and then stole second and third and came home on a passed ball.

In the second inning, Adam McCarty had a lead off single and an outfield error allowed McCarty to go to third base. A throwing error back to the infield then scored McCarty.

Tyler Wells walked, Chase McWhorter struck out but the ball got away from the catcher and the throw to first base went into right field. Another throwing error back to the infield allowed both runners to score.

The lead went to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Kinney walked, stole second, and came around to score on a pair of passed balls.

Chesapeake got its three runs in the bottom of the inning.

P.J. Rase singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a hit by Jeff Gilkison. Cody Methax doubled to score Gilkison and Matt Whitmore singled to drive in the final run.

Matt Rowe went 2-for-3 and Whitmore 2-4 to lead the Panthers.

South Point is now 3-1 in the league. Chesapeake, 5-4 and 2-2 in the OVC, plays at Wayne, W.Va., Tuesday.
