Fighting Tigers keep bats going in rout of Raceland

RACELAND, Ky. - The Swat Team answered another call.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers swatted opposing pitchers for double digit hits for the third straight game as they routed the Raceland Rams 16-5 Monday.

Five different players had multiple hits and Ironton had seven extra base hits en route to a 16-5 rout of the Raceland Rams Monday.

"We've been hitting the ball the last week or so. Even our outs tonight were hit hard," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. "I hope we can sustain this through the tournament."

Chad Miller got the win with his second complete game. He struck out 10, walked two, hit a batter and scattered 10 hits.

Josh Adkins, Patrick Kouns and Dustin Preston all went 3-for-5 and Preston drove in three runs. Chris Rakes was 2-4 with two RBIs and Ryan Walker went 2-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Cory Darby went 4-4 with five runs batted in for the Rams (6-6).

The Fighting Tigers came out swinging with eight runs in the first inning.

Waginger and Rakes hit back-to-back doubles for the first run. Adkins beat out an infield hit and Rakes scored on a wild pitch.

Dennis Gagai walked and Preston smacked a two-run single. Kouns and Walker singled for another run and Miller was safe on an error as a run scored. Walker then came home on a wild pitch and Miller scored when Waginger grounded out.

Raceland got two runs back in the bottom of the first inning as Thomas Tolliver singled, Josh Miller walked, and Darby had a two-run single.

Ironton got a run back in the second inning on a single by Adkins and a double by Preston.

The Rams closed the gap to 9-4 in their half of the inning, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the game.

Nathan Wilson and Tolliver singled and Darby had another two-run single.

But the Ironton lead went to 12-4 in the third inning.

Miller walked, J.J. Johnson beat out an infield hit and Rakes doubled for the first run. Adkins grounded out and Johnson scored on the throw to first base. Rakes came home on a wild pitch.

Raceland scored a run in the fourth inning when Tolliver was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Darby's third hit.

Kouns singled and Walker tripled off the base of the fence in right-center as Ironton went up 13-5 in the sixth inning.

The Fighting Tigers capped the scoring with three runs in the seventh inning.

Waginger walked and came around to score on a passed ball and throwing error. Adkins tripled, Preston had an RBI double and Kouns drove home the final run with a triple to right field.

Ironton (5-5) will play Portsmouth West at home Tuesday in a game originally scheduled to be played at West.
