Sometimes being well-rested isn't a good thing.
The rainy weather and scheduling caused the St. Joseph Flyers to sit idle for nearly two weeks and the rust was evident as they lost 12-7 to the Portsmouth East Tartans Thursday.
"You can tell we haven't played in 10 days. We were awful rusty," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said.
East got a run in the first inning and four in the second to lead 5-0 before the Flyers got a run in the bottom of the inning.
Jeremy Addis singled, stole second, went to third on Alex Swarts' infield hit and scored when Josh Reidel was safe on an error.
East added two runs in the fourth inning only to have the Flyers answer with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Addis reached on an error, stole second, took third on a ground out and scored on a dropped third strike.
The Tartans got a run in the sixth inning and pushed across four more in the seventh inning to take a comfortable 12-2 lead.
But the Flyers refused to quit as they scored five in the bottom of the seventh.
Tommy Nelson walked, Ryan Schwab was safe on an error, Aaron Whaley walked, Cory Lewis singled home two and Addis launched a three-run homer.
Addis went 3-4, Jordan 2-3 and Lewis 2-4.
The Flyers, 1-12, hosts Rose Hill at 11 p.m. Saturday.
