Walks will haunt. Just ask the St. Joseph Flyers.
The South Gallia Rebels took advantage of six walks used a 3-run homer in the sixth inning by Jason Wright to beat the Flyers 8-7 Thursday.
"Walks are killing us," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said. "We played well enough to win. We have to stop doing the little things that are costing us."
South Gallia took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning only to have the Flyers cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third inning when Ryan Schwab singled and Corey Lewis slammed a two-run homer.
The Rebels got two runs in the top of the fifth inning to lead 5-2, but the Flyers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead.
Schwab and Ryan Waginger singled, Lewis walked and Jeremy Addis hit a sacrifice fly. Alex Swarts followed by slamming a three-run home run.
But two walks and a three-run homer by Wright in the top of the sixth inning put the Rebels back on top at 8-6.
St. Joseph tried to mount a comeback in the seventh inning on doubles by Waginger and Lewis. But the Flyers were unable to generate any more offense and fell to 1-4.
Lewis was 3-for-3, Schwab 2-for-3 and Swarts and Waginger 2-4 to lead the Flyers 10-hit attack.
