Smith#039;s one-hitter keys Pointers win over CG
COAL GROVE - It was the kind of day a player dreams about, and Justin Smith lived out his dream.
Smith pitched a one-hitter and belted a home run as he led the South Point Pointers to a 12-0 shutout win over the Coal Grove Hornets Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
"Smith just had an incredible day. To give up one hit, strike out 13 and hit a home run, he had
a pretty good day," Pointers coach Dave Adams said.
South Point had 14 hits led by Dale Kinney who went 3-for-4 and Anthony Ross who was 3-3. Kyle Hughes was 2-3 and Tyler Wells 2-4.
"That's a good way to end the league. We started hitting the ball again today. We haven't been hitting the ball lately," Adams said
Bryan Bryant lined a single to lead off the sixth inning for the only Coal Grove hit.
South Point got two runs in the first inning. Ross and Kinney singled, and Smith grounded to shortstop to score Ross. Kinney ran to third base on the play and scored when the return throw went into the outfield.
The lead went to 4-0 in the second inning.
Wells hit into a fielder's choice, Hughes singled, Chase McWhorter walked and Ross had a two-run single.
A run scored in the fourth inning with two outs.
McWhorter was hit by a pitch, Corey Smoot was safe on an error and Ross drove in the run with a base hit.
In the fifth inning, Rocky Roe walked, Chris Brown hit into a fielder's choice and Wells had an RBI double to make it 6-0.
Another pair of runs crossed the plate in the sixth inning when Kinney singled and Smith slugged a two-run homer with two outs.
South Point put the game away with four runs in the seventh inning.
Wells singled, Beau Weed grounded out, Corey Garred walked and Smoot singled in a run. Kinney then delivered a two-run single, moved to second base on the thrown home, took third on a passed ball and scored when the throw went down the left field line.
South Point, 14-9 and finished second in the OVC at 8-2, hosts Huntington St. Joseph Wednesday.
