AID - It was a slam and slam day for the Symmes Valley Vikings.

In the first game Saturday, Chase Higgins slammed the door on the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans with a six-hitter as the Vikings won 3-1.

The next slam came in the second game when Derek Carpenter hit a grand slam to highlight a 13-3 win over Beaver Eastern in six innings.

"We did well. Our guys have been playing better lately. It's nice to be playing well heading into the tournament," Vikings coach John Patterson said.

Higgins struck out five and walked one in the first game to get the win.

The Vikings got two runs in the third inning. Brice Sexton was safe on an error, Justin Walsh singled, Cory Burcham put down a sacrifice bunt and Justin Holland doubled home both runners.

The Vikings added an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Holland singled, Matt Owens reached on an error and Kyle Meadows doubled.

Notre Dame got a run in the seventh before Higgins got the final two outs to end the game.

In the second game, the Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the first inning only to have Carpenter deliver the key blow in the third inning.

Meadows singled, Higgins walked and Jesse Myers was safe on an error to load the bases. Carpenter then belted a grand slam home run to make it 7-1.

Matt Owens doubled home three runs in the fourth inning that extended the lead to 10-1.

Meadows clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning that ended the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Symmes Valley, 11-6 and 8-5 in the SOC, travels to Western Lathan Tuesday in the SOC finale. The Vikings host South Webster at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Division IV sectional finals.
