Walk into downtown Ironton on Saturday and you might just drive home in a new car - and a chance to win $1 million.
Five qualifying participants and spectators at the Tri-State's first Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will have a chance to win a new Pontiac G6 as part of the Bob Clyse Pontiac-GMC Classic Saturday night in downtown Ironton.
Participants will be drawn randomly and will be required to successfully make basketball shots, the details of which will be disclosed at the event.
The car giveaway will be held in between rounds of the slam-dunk contest that begins at 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Second and Vernon streets.
Participants can register for the car giveaway at the site and at Bob Clyse Pontiac-GMC located at 904 S. Third St., in Ironton. In addition, participants will have a chance to win $1 million and a trip to the 2006 Final Four as part of the Pontiac Performance Plays Program and can win a $2,500 donation for the local school of their choice.
The Ironton Gus Macker event will begin Friday afternoon with registration. Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with games scheduled throughout the day on Saturday and then on Sunday.
Bob Clyse Pontiac-GMC is one of the presenting sponsors for the tournament that will bring more than 700 players to Ironton this weekend.
Other presenting sponsors include Coke/POWERade, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, The Ironton Tribune and Clark’s Pump-N-Shop/Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC. Special event sponsors include ClearChannel/Big Sandy Superstore and Kevin Waldo.
A Michigan man started the tournament in his driveway in Lowell, Mich., in 1974, and turned it into a touring charity event in 1987 with five cities hosting the All-World Tour.
Proceeds from the Ironton Macker event will go to the Friends of Ironton, a grassroots, civic improvement organization. Past Friends of Ironton projects include the purchase of bullet-resistant vests for the Ironton Police Department, purchase and installation of new street signs throughout the Ironton area and numerous other charitable causes.
